Area 4 partners support education project and safe reopening of schools in Palma District

• Program promotes improved school retention and builds support for formal education

• More than 240 children and 11 schools benefitted from the initiative

More than 240 children from 11 schools benefitted from a $300k investment that supports extracurricular awareness campaigns, promote community ownership and the importance of education as way to improve retention, as well as adult literacy throughout the Palma District.

In compliance with the government’s safe return to school COVID-19 protocols, the project provided water, improved sanitation and performed basic facility rehabilitation at 11 target schools, ensuring enhanced safety conditions for students. The project was implemented in strict coordination with Palma’s District Government’s Services for Education, Youth and Technology.

“Education is a key component of Area 4’s social investment strategies,” said Jos Evens, General Manager for ExxonMobil Moçambique, Limitada. “These initiatives are aimed at supporting students, teachers and the community, as each play an important role in improving education outcomes. Through improved education we hope to support the government’s efforts to improve literacy in Cabo Delgado, and reduce the rates of early marriages and teen pregnancies.”

“Public-private partnerships are critical to support the government in meeting priority community needs. Education continues to be a priority focus area in the District of Palma, and this program supported by Area 4 has brought enhancements that will benefit not only the teachers and students, but also the community through adult literacy.” said Júlio Muzimo, ADPP project coordinator.

(MRV), an incorporated joint venture owned by ExxonMobil, Eni and CNPC, which holds a 70 percent interest in the Area 4 exploration and production concession contract. In addition to MRV, Galp, KOGAS and Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos E.P. each hold a 10 percent interest in Area 4. ExxonMobil is leading the construction and operation of the natural gas liquefaction and related facilities on behalf of MRV, and Eni is leading the construction and operation of upstream facilities
